The Golden Globe Awards ceremony officially kick-started the Hollywood red carpet season this Sunday, January 6. Brace yourselves, therefore, all you fashion lovers because the Golden Globe Awards is the first major awards show culminating with the Oscars in February. As expected, bowties, ball gowns, dresses, tuxedoes, and the red carpet rolled out. Yes, child! And of course, some of us curled up on our couches and glued to our screens.
Golden Globe Awards Dresses in Pops of Color
By a mile, this year’s Golden Globe Awards dresses and gowns sizzled with pops of color that stood out. This was definitely contrary to last year when most stars opted for black to protest sexual misconduct in Hollywood. Without a doubt, the red carpet didn’t disappoint. Notably, our black actors and actresses turned it up as always… well, not entirely. Of course, while some of them stunned and wowed, some just fizzled and left us with looks that were simple “meh!” Truth be told, fashion ultimately is about personal taste. Therefore, while some looks have earned rave reviews, they have equally been heavily criticized.
Lupita’s Dress, a Win or a fail?
For instance, Lupita Nyong’o’s Calvin Klein by Appointment royal blue fringed gown was a solid win for me. I absolutely loved the color against her skin and then talk about the fit! Obviously, that woman knows her body well! However, some Twitter and Facebook fans did not think so. In fact, one Facebook comment likened the outfit to “a cell stained in a petri dish”. Meanwhile, did she confuse anyone else like she did me with the clear glasses on stage? I was thrown off completely!
What do you think about Janelle Monáe’s look?
Another star whose look has been very controversial as well is Janelle Monáe. Specifically, her Egyptian goddess-inspired black and gold tweed Chanel dress with a bedazzled collar over a white floor-length, knit dress has received some conflicting reviews. Although I loved the fact that she drew inspiration from her African roots, I’m still scratching my head on the outfit. Come on Janelle, this is the red carpet for crying out loud. Definitely not some exhibition of African history. Regardless of my thoughts, a fan raved, “Janelle Monáe for Golden Globes 2019, once again slaying the red carpet in true goddess fashion”. Meanwhile, another fan tweeted simply, “This dress is ugly.”
So now over to you? What do you think about the red carpet fashion at this year’s Golden Globes. Please share your thoughts in the comments section below.
