African Print Styles by Stella McCartney
We have spotted about 5 unimpressive pieces of African prints dresses during Stella McCartney SS18 show at #PFW. By this we mean, the designer has shown a lack of creativity and ambition when playing with ‘our’ rich Ankara fabric.
McCartney’s collections have occasionally been critiqued as not ambitious enough or overly basic. That goes without saying from the brands collection during Paris Fashion Week. You don’t have to look too hard these days to find a well stitched ‘Kaba’ dress on Pinterest and ESTY.
Amongst her collection is a basic functional “Kaba” typically worn by women in Cameroon as a lounge wear. In my opinion, she should stay in her lane and not infringe in what local African tailors have been stitching for decades.
Stella’s forte is bags and shoes. Furthermore, she failed to add a flare to the bold printed African fabrics. Let the designer stick with the accessories and give African labels a chance to shine.
What do you think about European Fashion Designers copying African styles and putting this big logos on them?
